Virtual Private Server Shell Commands

In order to make managing your Virtual Private Server easier, we have provided a few commands that are unique to our Virtual Private Servers. These commands will not work on a standard UNIX server, but are helpful for managing your VPS.

The -v flag

Many system files on your Virtual Private Server are virtual symbolic links. The unique nature of these files is that as long as you use the original file provided, it does not affect your disk quota usage. Once you modify or replace a virtual symbolic link, it will become a regular file and will use part of your disk quota. Some commands used to view file or directory information (such as ls) have been given a -v flag option that will indicate if a file is a normal file or a virtual symbolic link.

The v commands

There are several special VPS only commands that are known as the v commands because they start with the letter 'v'. Many v commands from earlier versions of the VPS are no longer required. Many, however, are different from the standard UNIX command, or simply don't exist in standard UNIX.

Command Description Usage
vaddhost

Use vaddhost to add a Virtual Sub-Host to your Web server configuration file. The command guides you through the process in an easy to follow format.

vaddhost
vadduser

The vadduser command is an easy to use alternative to the traditional adduser command.

adduser
vinstall

vinstall is a package installer tool for common VPS packages. Running vinstall without a package name will enter interactive mode, where you can view available packages and learn more about them, as well as install them.

vinstall [packagename]
vuninstall

vuninstall is used to remove packages that were installed using vinstall. Not all vinstalls have a working vuninstall, and the vuninstall scripts are not supported.

vuninstall packagename
vlistuser

The vlistuser command lists the user accounts on your Virtual Private Server, along with their current disk quota usage (and their quota limit). For your convenience, the system accounts are not listed with this command.

vlistuser
vnukelog

The vnukelog command empties all the Web server log files on your Virtual Private Server, including the Virtual Sub-Hosts.

vnukelog
vnl

vnl is an interactive Web server log file manager, which allows you to view the size and empty out specific log files. vnl can also be used as a non-interactive tool to run in scripts. See vnl -h for non-interactive use information.

vnl [-h]
